The lovely Sharanna from the HQ team is preparing for the arrival of her first baby and decided to see how many garments she could create for baby using just 1 metre of merino from our exclusive Premium Merino range!
We’ve recently added a gorgeous palette of neutral earth tones and warm landscape colours to our Premium Merino collection, in a super soft 195gsm weight. These merinos are a versatile 150cm width so from just 1 metre, Sharanna was able to whip up a cute little set of newborn essentials, including a bodysuit, a beanie, a pair of leggings and a wrap!
Here at The Fabric Store, we love merino for so many reasons, especially its versatility and hypoallergenic properties, making it the perfect choice for babies and toddlers. Our premium merino is ethically produced just for us and beautifully soft, making it ideal for all seasons and great for layering. We recently created a handy guide for this incredible fabric and its many benefits, which you can find here. For this project, Sharanna chose three gorgeous colours to give her plenty of options for when her little one arrives!
Don’t forget you can also pair different colours together or even add a playful trim! Sharanna decided on a super cute Liberty Cotton Jersey to use as trim for the Rose Pink set.
DIY | Sharanna chose three Brindille & Twig patterns for this project and also followed the instructions in our recent DIY Merino Baby Wrap blog post. Brindille & Twig have tons of great patterns for babies and we chose three wardrobe staples for comfort and versatility. The three patterns featured here would be suitable for a confident beginner level sewer and do require the use of an overlocker/serger. We think a 195gsm weight of merino is an ideal weight to start out with if you are new to sewing knits!

* These Cuff Leggings recommend a 2cm elastic for the waistband. Sharanna decided to use a 1.2cm width, as she wanted a finer, softer finish on her Newborn size waistband.
If laying out these tiny patterns to maximise your fabric sounds a little tricky, don’t panic! Thankfully Sharanna is an excellent note taker and she drew out her lay plan as a handy reference which you can see below. This lay plan allowed for a set of the three Brindille & Twig essentials in their ‘Newborn’ size, plus a 1m x 1m wrap. The pattern layout is quite tight, so does need to be carefully considered. Sharanna recommends tracing each pattern piece out as full pieces, rather than cutting them on the fold, to minimise wastage.
Creating this set in a larger size for a bigger babe would work too, we recommend purchasing a little extra fabric though to accommodate slightly larger pieces!
We can’t believe how economical just 1 metre of 150cm wide Premium Merino was! Whether you’re an expecting mum to be, or have a special little one in your life, you’ll love these DIY Merino Baby essentials. We think this set would also make an ultra cute DIY baby shower gift!
